'Be Prepared' is Sage Advice
by Jihan Thomas
Learning how to be prepared was one of the best skills I was ever taught.
Hurricane Sandy has come upon the East Coast of the US. Many have said that this storm is of historic proportions. Wild weather patterns seem to have become commonplace around the world in the last few years and here, around NYC, is no exception.
Being so close to the Atlantic Ocean, our home lies in a potential flooding evacuation area. During extreme weather, we are always on alert to know if we have to leave and where to go. The challenge with a place like this is that we live on an island. Fleeing Long Island is not always an option. There isn't always a safe place to go or a way to get there, especially if you can't get over the bridges.
I was in the Girl Scouts as a kid and my Girl Scout leader took preparedness very seriously. She would talk about canned foods, finding water, making fires, having extra clothes and blankets, etc. She believed that whether we were at home, in the car, at school or at work we should have certain survival skills that would at least allow you enough time to figure out what to do next.
I thought she was looney. Honestly, I did. Why do we even need to talk about this stuff?
As a 10 year old, you can't possibly imagine what can happen. Certainly nothing my parents couldn't fix... after all, they know everything, right? Why be so hysterical??
